When Myspace came along I was busy potty training
and getting kids integrated into grade school
It wasn't my thing.
Facebook came along and my kids jumped on the
Facebook bandwagon. And then slowly
much to their chagrin, their parents started joining
Facebook, like all things internet based
has it's negatives
Sometimes my 'kids' (those in my school)
will post things that make me cringe
and I'm not even their real parent
I see angst relationship dramas play out like
an after school special, I watch people trying
to stir up support for their religious or political beliefs
I see all kinds of really bad information getting
shared and posted as true
I have seen almost every cute/odd/strange cat photo
ever taken
Some young people have left Facebook
like rats deserting a sinking ship
But I am not sure Facebook is sinking
There is something very hopeful
and life affirming about Facebook
Facebook has the ability to reach
across all kinds of barriers and unite people
Facebook also has a way of shrinking distances
keeping old friends, old relatives and old
acquaintances in touch
You can be on there and know that someone
else in the world acknowledges you
wishes you well
wants the world to be a place where
everyone gets along
You can support causes get informed
and rally around a community like
Newtown when tragedy strikes.
In a world where we can feel very
fractured and isolated
Facebook still has the ability
to bring people together
That can't be a bad thing.
